The Central Government has announced an extension to the deadline for mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for television sets. This decision comes in response to requests from the industry for more time to comply with the regulations. This notification was published on March 21, 2025.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, in exercise of powers conferred under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016, had previously issued an order (S.O. 1929(E)) on April 26, 2023, mandating BIS certification for “Television Sets.” This product category was added to the schedule of the “Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2021,” with compliance required to the Indian Standard IS 18112: 2022. The original date for this order to come into effect was April 26, 2025.
Recognizing the need for a smooth implementation process, the government engaged in discussions with stakeholders to address any potential challenges. Subsequently, the industry requested additional time to ensure full compliance with the new regulations.
Considering the discussions with stakeholders and the industry’s request, the Central Government has now extended the date of implementation for the mandatory BIS certification of television sets to October 26, 2025.
This extension provides manufacturers and importers of television sets with an additional six months to:
- Allow more time for companies to complete the necessary testing and BIS certification processes according to IS 18112: 2022.
- Facilitate a smoother transition and ensure that all stakeholders can meet the required standards.
Mandatory BIS certification is crucial for ensuring the quality, safety, and reliability of electronic goods sold in the Indian market. It helps to protect consumers from substandard products and promotes fair trade practices.
Manufacturers and importers are now expected to utilize this extended period to obtain the necessary BIS certifications before the revised deadline of October 26, 2025.
