As part of India’s “Viksit Bharat@2047” initiative, the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals recently conducted a two-day training program focused on “Chemical and Petrochemical Industrial Safety,” specifically targeting Major Accident Hazard (MAH) units. The program took place at CIPET: IPT-Bhubaneswar on January 10-11, 2025.
This training is part of a broader series of 48 programs planned over the next five years to cover all 2,393 identified MAH units across the country. The initiative aims to enhance safety standards and prevent major accidents in the chemical and petrochemical sector.
The Bhubaneswar program saw significant participation, with 108 representatives from 62 chemical industries in attendance, including personnel from 41 MAH units.
Expert instructors from prominent institutions and industries led the training sessions. These included:

- CSIR-Institute of Minerals and Materials Technology (IMMT)
- MSME Development & Facilitation Office-Odisha
- State Pollution Control Board
- IFFCO
- Paradeep Phosphate Ltd.
- Indian Oil Corporation Ltd.
- Jindal Steels & Power
The training covered a wide range of critical safety topics:
- Advanced Risk Assessment techniques
- Toxicology
- Onsite & Offsite Emergency Planning
- The role of ICT and other technologies in chemical safety
- Global Harmonized System (GHS)
- Hazardous Identification techniques
- Loss statistics and loss prevention
- Process Safety Management
- Environmental and spill prevention
- Hazardous Waste Management
- Chemical labeling and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
- Fire and Explosion Safety
A key highlight of the program was a practical mock drill conducted in collaboration with the State Fire Department of Odisha, providing participants with hands-on experience in emergency response procedures.
