The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued an advisory against the commercialization of human milk and its products. This advisory was dated May 24, 2024.
The FSSAI has categorically emphasized that it has not authorized the processing or sale of human milk under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 (FSS Act) and its associated regulations.
This advisory comes in response to inquiries from registered societies regarding the commercialization of human milk.
The FSSAI emphasizes that all activities related to the commercial sale of human milk and its products must cease immediately. Violators risk legal action under the FSS Act.
State and Central Licensing Authorities are directed to ensure no licenses or registrations are issued to businesses involved in processing or selling human milk.
The sale of human milk and related products in India is illegal. This includes any processed or modified forms of human milk.
