The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a new notice superseding its previous guidelines, outlining a streamlined process for manufacturers and method developers to apply for the approval of Rapid Analytical Food Testing (RAFT) kits, equipment, and methods. This notice was issued on February 28, 2025.
The FSSAI aims to enhance the efficiency and transparency of the approval process through an online portal and clear guidelines.
Application Procedure
Applications must be submitted through the online RAFT Portal. No other mode of application will be accepted. Only duly filled, complete, and signed applications will be considered.
Applicants will be given two opportunities to submit additional information or rectify errors. Applicants have 30 days for technical queries and 7 days for administrative queries, with provisions for extensions upon written request. Failure to comply will result in rejection.
Mandatory Validation
Validation by a third party, such as an authorized FSSAI laboratory or international organizations (AOAC, AFNOR, etc.), is mandatory. Validation must include single laboratory validation of all parameters and a collaborative ring trial.
FSSAI will only consider applications from commercial manufacturers, not innovators, researchers, or institutions. Technology transfers require re-validation by the commercial manufacturer.
International Manufacturers
International manufacturers are encouraged to apply directly. Applications from Indian importers/distributors must include an authorization letter. Indian subsidiaries are to be used when overseas manufacturers have them.
Applications must include proper justification and supporting documents for each product. Applications for general laboratory equipment (pH meters, density meters, etc.) will be rejected. Only applications based on parameters specified in Food Safety and Standards Regulations will be considered.
Separate applications and fees (Rs. 2000 + 18% GST) are required for each kit/equipment/method.
Renewal applications must be submitted online at least 60 days before the certificate expires.
