FSSAI Seeks To Increase Maximum Content Of Esters In Fruit Wines

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued draft Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Amendment Regulations 2024. The draft amendment regulations alter the requirements relating characteristics of wines. The FSSAI has issued this draft notification on June 14, 2024.

The draft regulations seek to amend table-2 of the Food Safety and Standards (Alcoholic Beverages) Regulations, 2018. Table-2 details characteristic requirements for various types of wines. These include table wine, wine with carbon dioxide, fortified wine, fruit wine other than grape wine, cider perry wine from other agricultural and plant sources.

The present draft amendment specifically seeks to enhance the maximum content of esters expressed as ethyl acetate (g/l of absolute alcohol). However, this enhancement is restricted to fruit wine other than grape wine. The level has been increased from 2.0 g/l of absolute alcohol to 3.0 g/l of absolute alcohol.

The level of esters expressed as ethyl acetate for all other wines remains unchanged.
