FSSAI Reverses Order on Used Cooking Oil (UCO)

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has withdrawn its earlier order that had removed bar on mixing fresh oil with used cooking oil with a Total Polar Compound (TPC) value above 25%. This order was issued on August 5, 2024.

It may be recalled that FSSAI by its previous order dated January 30, 2019, had stipulated that cooking oil with a TPC value above 25% should not be mixed with fresh oil. However, after reviewing the testing protocols and related enforcement challenges, the FSSAI had decided to revoke this provision by an order dated January 20, 2022.

However, now, by the present order, the FSSAI has once again imposed this mandate by withdrawing its previous revocation.

Hence, FSSAI has once again mandated that cooking oil with a TPC value above 25% should not be topped up with fresh oil.

The FSSAI continues to emphasize the importance of proper disposal of used cooking oil to prevent environmental contamination and promote its recycling for beneficial use.
