The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a partial modification to its previously reconstituted Scientific Panels, updating the composition of four key panels. This order was issued on April 8, 2025.
This order serves as a partial modification to the FSSAI’s orders dated February 24, 2023, and September 18, 2023, which initially reconstituted the Scientific Committee (SC) and Scientific Panels (SPs).
The FSSAI’s Scientific Panels play a crucial role in providing expert scientific advice on matters related to food safety and standards. These panels consist of experts from various fields and are responsible for evaluating scientific data, conducting risk assessments, and recommending appropriate standards and regulations.
The revised composition applies specifically to the following Scientific Panels:
- Food Additives, Flavourings, Processing Aids and Food Contact Materials (SP-01)
- Genetically Modified Organisms and Foods (SP-04)
- Sweets, Confectionery, Sweetener, Sugar and Honey (SP-16)
- Nutraceuticals, Functional Foods, Dietetic Products and Other Similar Products (SP-05)
The updated composition of these panels is detailed in an Annexure accompanying the order.
The FSSAI has clarified that this order only supersedes the earlier orders with respect to the composition of the four specifically mentioned Scientific Panels. The composition of other Scientific Panels and the Scientific Committee remains unchanged.
