The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced the re-operationalization of its revised standards for packaged drinking water (other than mineral water). This direction was issued on July 26, 2024. These new standards will come into effect on July 1, 2024.
The revised standards focus on parameters such as total dissolved solids, calcium, and magnesium content in packaged drinking water. These changes aim to ensure the quality and safety of drinking water available to consumers.
The FSSAI has been working on finalizing these amendments, which were initially proposed in 2022. The draft amendment was re-operationalized on June 21, 2022 and last re-operationalized on March 12, 2024. While the final regulations are still pending approval, the authority has decided to implement the revised standards for permissible limits of total dissolved solids, calcium, and magnesium to facilitate the industry’s adaptation process.
This move is expected to benefit consumers by providing them with safer and higher quality packaged drinking water.
