FSSAI publishes the Draft Regulations of the FSS (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2020

FSSAI has published the Draft Regulations of the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Amendment Regulations, 2020. These were published on 31st August 2020 by a notification dated 27th August 2020. These Regulations are intended to amend the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restriction on Sales) Regulations, 2011.

The Drafts Regulations propose the addition of a restriction relating to the conditions for the sale of non-edible ice/ ice blocks. It requires the use of Indigo Carmine or Brilliant Blue up to 10 ppm in the production of non-edible ice/ ice blocks.  This applies to non-edible ice that comes in contact with food products. Such contact may occur during preservation/storage/transportation of perishable food commodities.

The addition of these substances will give the ice a bluish appearance which will enable clear distinction from edible ice which will remain colourless.

The FSSAI seeks objections and suggestions from the general public on the draft regulation within 60 days from when the notification is made available to the public. These may be addressed to the Chief Executive Officer, Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, Food and Drug Administration Bhawan, Kotla Road, New Delhi – 110002 . They may also be sent through an email addressed to the Food Authority:  regulation@fssai.gov.in
