The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations, 2018. The proposed changes focus on removing a specific statement regarding iron-fortified foods and individuals with Thalassemia or Sickle Cell Anemia.
The FSSAI is proposing to delete the sub-regulation that currently states that packages of iron-fortified food must carry a warning for individuals with Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anemia.
It may be recalled that the FSSAI had on July 19, 2024, announced this revision to labeling requirements for iron-fortified food products. This change was brough about based on a review by the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare (MoHFW).
The FSSAI has determined that this specific warning is no longer necessary in light of the review conducted by the MOHFW.
The FSSAI has invited comments and suggestions on these draft regulations. Interested stakeholders can submit their feedback by November 22, 2024. This feedback shall be provided on FSSAI’s e-platform for comments in the prescribed format.
