FSSAI prohibits the sale of health supplement and nutraceutical products which contains Para Amino Benzonic Acid

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India in its circular dated 16th July 2020 has directed the commissioners of food safety of states/UTs to carry out surveillance and enforcement to ensure compliance of its earlier order which banned use of PABA (para amino benzoic acid) in health supplements and nutraceutical products.

FSSAI in its earlier order dated 29th June 2020 has banned the use of PABA (para aminobenzoic acid) in the products cover nutraceutical regulations due to safety concerns and has also directed the food business operators to stop manufacturing of the products using this ingredient and products that were already manufactured/imported shall be withdrawn from the market.

However, in spite of the above order, the products are being sold in the market as well as on e-Commerce platforms, therefore FSSAI has requested commissioners of food safety of states/UTs to carry out surveillance and enforcement and to ensure compliance of its earlier order. The Action taken report shall be communicated to the office.
