Food Safety and Standard Authority of India vide its circular dated 8th June 2020 issued certain directions under section 16(5) of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 regarding the operationalization of Food Safety and Standard (Food Products Standard and Food Additive)Amendment Regulations, 2020 relating to standards for fortified Atta, fortified maida, iodized salt and Iron-fortified iodized salts.
Food Safety and Standards (Fortification of Foods) Regulations 2018 and Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations 2011 have prescribed standards for iodized salt, fortified Atta, fortified maida, and Iron-fortified iodized salts. To avoid duplication a proposal for the omission of these standards from FSSR, 2011 was drafted on 15.04.2019 but the same is under the process of final notification.
As the final notification of these regulations will take more time due to this pandemic COVID-19 situation and avoid legal issues it has been decided to operationalize the proposed notification prescribing the omission of clauses relating to standards for fortified atta, fortified maida, iodized salt and iron-fortified iodized salts from Food Safety and Standard(Food product Standard and Food Additives) Regulation, 2011, with immediate effect until the issuance of final notification in this regard.
