The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India vide its notification dated 28th December 2021, has issued clarification on displaying information in food service establishments as per the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and labelling) Regulation, 2011 which shall be effective from 1st January 2022 with the intent to provide nutritional information to consumers.
The regulation mandated the provision for “Display of Information in Food service Establishments (Menu Labelling), However, after considering the facts represented by the hotel and restaurant associations that Menu Labelling is being introduced for the first time in the country and the hotel & restaurant industry is still recovering from the covid-19 pandemic disruptions, it has been decided that, in order to grant some additional time to the FBOs to adopt the practice of Menu Labelling in a self-compliant manner, no sampling of the food items listed on the menu cards/boards/booklets by the FBos shall be carried out to check/verify the respective declarations of calorific value and nutritional information till 30th June, 2022.
Further, it is clarified that any non-compliance may be addressed by issuing improvement notice under Section 32 of the FSS Act, 2006 for further compliance.
