The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has implemented extensive measures to guarantee the availability of safe and hygienic food for the millions of devotees attending the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. A press release on its measures was issued on January 19, 2025.
Deploying a multi-pronged approach involving on-site testing, robust surveillance, and public awareness campaigns, FSSAI is actively working to maintain high food safety standards throughout the Mela.
Mobile Food Testing and On-the-Spot Checks
In collaboration with the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration, FSSAI has deployed 10 Mobile Food Testing Labs (Food Safety on Wheels) across the Maha Kumbh area. These mobile labs, staffed with food analysts, conduct immediate testing of food items for adulteration and spoilage. They also play a crucial role in educating Food Business Operators (FBOs), street food vendors, and the general public about safe food handling practices.
Comprehensive On-Ground Surveillance
The Mela area is divided into five zones and 25 sectors, each monitored by dedicated Food Safety Officers (FSOs). A total of 56 FSOs, including five Chief Food Safety Officers (CFSOs), are stationed across the grounds. Two FSOs are assigned to each sector, with a CFSO supervising each zone, ensuring thorough coverage and enforcement of food safety regulations. A central office at Sankat Mochan Marg in Sector 24 manages all food safety operations.
Stringent Inspections and Complaint Resolution
Regular inspections are conducted at hotels, dhabas, and food stalls within the Mela premises to verify food quality. On-ground teams have been instructed to promptly address food safety complaints and take immediate action through rigorous checks on cooking methods and the quality of raw materials.
Regular Sample Testing
Samples of essential food items like rice, sugar, and wheat flour intended for the Maha Kumbh Mela are routinely collected for testing. These samples are taken from both distribution and storage points and tested at the Regional Public Health Laboratory in Varanasi.
Public Awareness and Engagement
FSSAI has established an interactive pavilion to engage with devotees and vendors. These pavilions feature:
- Nukkad Nataks (Street Plays): Highlighting the importance of safe food practices.
- Live Quizzes: Testing and enhancing knowledge of food safety and nutrition.
- FSSAI Official Interaction: Providing information and addressing queries on topics like adulteration, licensing, and training.
