FSSAI directs ban on use of Packing Films around Sweet Boxes

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ((FSSAI) has reiterated the ban on use of packing films around sweet boxes. This direction was issued on 16th June, 2023.

The FSSAI points out that the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC) had notified the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules, 2021. The amendment prohibits manufacture, import, stocking, distribution, sale and use of single use plastic items. These items include candy sticks, icecream sticks, plates, cups, cutlery such as forks, spoons, knives, straw, trays, packing or wrapping films around sweet boxes, invitation cards and cigarette packets, plastic or PVC banners less than 100 microns and stirrers which have low utility and high littering potential. These items were prohibited from 1st July, 2022.

Hence concerned Food Safety Officer and Designated Officer shall ensure effective compliance with the above directions. Hence, Food Business Operators (FBOs) are directed to ensure that no packing films are used to wrap/ pack sweet boxes.
