The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India through circular dated 2nd July, 2021 has issued clarification regarding the definition of product ‘coconut water’ under the FSS(Food Product Standards and Food Additives) Tenth Amendment Regulations, 2020, which shall come into effect on 1 July, 2021. The prior definition provided that ‘coconut water’ is obtained from tender coconut without expressing the coconut meat. It is amended to provide that ‘coconut water’ is obtained from coconut without expressing the coconut meat. The clarification has widened the scope of the term to include coconut water obtained from tender or mature coconut.
