The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has announced a revised timeline for compliance with amendments to labeling provisions. The decision was made during the 45th meeting of the Food Authority. The order on this decision was issued on January 3, 2024.
Under Section 92 of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, the FSSAI has the authority to amend Food Safety and Standards Regulations with the approval of the Central Government.
Key decisions from the 45th meeting regarding the implementation of labeling amendments include:
The FSSAI has set a standard enforcement date of July 1st for amendments related to the FSS (Labelling and Display) Regulations, as well as any labeling changes specified in other FSS Regulations. This date is subject to a minimum of 180 days from the date of official notification of the amendments. This ensures businesses have adequate time to adjust their labeling practices.
Recognizing that unforeseen circumstances may arise, the Authority has also stipulated that in emergency situations, the implementation and enforcement timeline may be decided on a case-by-case basis. This allows for flexibility and responsiveness to urgent public health or safety concerns.
