Ensuring Healthcare Equity: Implementing Supreme Court Orders on HIV/AIDS

In a significant move towards healthcare equity, the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India has issued directives aimed at bolstering provisions for HIV/AIDS care and prevention. Referencing the landmark judgment, the Court has mandated specific actions for both the central and state governments. This notification was published on 27/05/2024.

These directives, now extended to Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) and Employees’ State Insurance Scheme (ESIS) hospitals, encompass various facets of HIV/AIDS management. They include ensuring comprehensive treatment facilities, adherence to National AIDS Control Program guidelines, and fostering inclusive education and communication programs. Moreover, the directives emphasize the importance of creating a safe work environment for healthcare personnel, along with strict compliance with the provisions of the HIV Act. Hospitals are further instructed to appoint a complaint officer and devise standard operating procedures to address any violations of the Act.

This concerted effort towards adherence to Supreme Court directives underscores a commitment to equitable healthcare access for all. By implementing these measures, ESIC and ESIS hospitals play a pivotal role in advancing public health and combating the stigma associated with HIV/AIDS.
