Draft Rules for Automatic Level Gauges Open for Public Comment

The Department of Consumer Affairs has released draft rules for Automatic Level Gauges (ALGs) for public comment. These rules aim to ensure the accuracy and reliability of ALGs used in measuring liquid levels in stationary storage tanks. These draft rules were published on January 7, 2025.

The Department invites comments and suggestions from all stakeholders by February 6, 2025. The draft rules are available for review on the department’s website. Comments can be submitted via email to dirwm-ca@nic.in or mk.naik72@gov.in.

The draft rules apply to ALGs used in various storage tanks, including vertical, cylindrical, pressurized, refrigerated, and heated tanks.

The rules specify requirements for accuracy, indicating devices (both local and remote), suspension mechanisms for movable sensors, and installation considerations.

The maximum permissible error (MPE) is defined for both before and after installation verification. Requirements are outlined for clear and unambiguous display of measured values, including innage (dip), ullage, and units.

The rules emphasize proper installation to minimize external influences on performance and ensure accessibility for verification.

These devices should not affect measurements and be tamper-proof. Specific information, including manufacturer, model number, serial number, and approval number, needs to be clearly displayed on the ALG and repeating indicating devices. A designated space for verification marks is mandated.
