Draft EPR Rules for Packaging Made From Paper, Glass, Metal And Sanitary Products

The Indian government has proposed to introduce new rules to strengthen Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for packaging materials made from paper, glass, metal, and sanitary products. The draft rules aim to reduce environmental pollution and promote sustainable packaging practices. These draft rules were published on December 6, 2024.

Key Provisions of the New Draft Rules

The rules expand the scope of EPR to include a wider range of entities, including producers, importers, brand owners, and waste processors.

They also impose stricter regulations on the management of packaging waste, including recycling, reuse, and end-of-life disposal.

A centralized online portal will be established to facilitate registration, reporting, and monitoring of EPR activities.

Non-compliance with EPR obligations will result in the imposition of environmental compensation.

The rules promote sustainable packaging practices, including reduced packaging, use of recycled content, and recyclable materials.

These new rules are expected to have a significant impact on the packaging industry in India. They will encourage manufacturers and brands to adopt more sustainable packaging practices, reduce waste, and promote recycling. Additionally, the rules will help to improve waste management practices and protect the environment.
