The Central Government through press release dated 02.07.2021 has published the draft Advocates (Protection) Bill, 2021. The Bill seeks to ensure protection of advocates from violent crimes and harassment through police investigation, illegal arrest, malicious prosecution or frivolous litigation. The Bill provides for expeditious trial, increased punishment and police protection for lawyers encountering threats of violent crimes. The bill also mandates permission from judicial magistrate for investigation and arrest of advocates.
