The Dental Council of India (DCI) has issued a directive to all state governments, urging them to revise their recruitment policies to ease the burden on dentists applying for government job vacancies. This notice dated March 20, 2025 was published on March 28, 2025.
The DCI has received numerous complaints from dentists who are required to register with the respective State Dental Council before applying for permanent government vacancies. This rule effectively prevents them from applying for positions in multiple states simultaneously, limiting their career opportunities.
The DCI has reminded state governments of its previous circular dated February 1, 2019, which called for adherence to Section 46(5) of the Dentists Act, 1948. This section allows for inter-state and intra-state registration of dental surgeons, dental hygienists, and dental mechanics with any State Dental Council.
The DCI recommends that state governments allow dentists to apply for vacancies with their existing registration from any State Dental Council. Once a candidate is selected, the state government can then request the applicant to transfer their registration under Section 46A of the Dentists Act, 1948.
This proposed change aims to:
- Enable dentists to apply for vacancies in multiple states without the need for immediate registration in each state.
- Reduce the administrative burden on both applicants and state governments.
- Protect the career prospects of qualified dentists across the country.
The DCI has requested state governments to take prompt action on this matter, emphasizing the need to safeguard the careers of deserving dentists. This initiative seeks to promote fairness and efficiency in the recruitment process for dental professionals in India.
