Delhi’s air quality has taken a sharp turn for the worse, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in NCR and Adjoining Areas to invoke emergency measures under Stage-III of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). This press release was issued on December 16, 2024.
Air Quality Concerns
Delhi’s Air Quality Index (AQI) has been steadily rising, reaching a concerning 379 by 4 PM on December 16, 2024.
Forecasts predict the AQI to remain in the “Very Poor” to “Severe” category in the coming days due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Emergency Actions Under Stage-III GRAP
- Most construction and demolition activities are strictly prohibited, with exemptions only for essential projects.
- All stone crusher and mining operations in NCR are shut down.
- Strict restrictions are placed on the movement of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel vehicles. Additionally, BS-IV and below diesel LCVs from outside Delhi are not allowed to enter the city, except for essential goods.
- Schools for children up to Class V will switch to a hybrid learning model (both physical and online) in Delhi and surrounding districts.
- Staggered working hours will be implemented for public offices and municipal bodies in Delhi and NCR districts.
CAQM urges citizens to cooperate by:
- Opting for walking, cycling, or public transport for short trips.
- Carpooling for work whenever possible.
- Working from home (if permissible).
- Avoiding open burning of biomass, wood, and garbage.
- Combining errands to minimize travel.
