Delhi constitutes Medical Termination of Pregnancy Medical Boards

The Lt. Governor of the National Capital Territory of Delhi has established several Medical Boards across the National Capital Territory of Delhi to oversee and facilitate the processes outlined in the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act, 1971. This notification was issued on 4th September, 2023 and has come into immediate effect.

The following are the Medical Boards constituted for the National Capital Territory of Delhi:

List of Government Hospitals:

  1. Lok Nayak Hospital
  2. Guru Teg Bahadur Hospital
  3. Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital
  4. Dr. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital
  5. Hindu Rao Hospital
  6. LHMC & SSK Hospital
  7. Safdarjung Hospital
  8. AIIMS, Delhi

List of Private Hospitals:

  1. St. Stephen Hospital
  2. Sir Ganga Ram Hospital
  3. Apollo Hospital, Sarita Vihar
  4. Dr. B.L. Kapur Hospital
  5. Max Super Speciality Hospital, Patparganj

Composition/Structure of the Medical Board:

The structure of each Medical Board will consist of the following members:

  1. Head of Obstetrics & Gynaecology or any senior doctor – Chairperson
  2. Paediatrician/Neonatologist – Member
  3. Radiologist/Ultrasonologist/Fetal Medicine Specialist/Genetics – Member
  4. Any other specialist as per the requirement of the case – Member
  5. Medical Superintendent or an administrative officer nominated by the Medical Superintendent – Convener
  6. For Private Hospital Medical Boards, a member from a Government hospital shall be nominated – Member

It is crucial to note that each Medical Board must include at least one female member. In situations where a board member is unavailable during discussions on a specific case, suitable substitutions may be made by the Chairperson.

Furthermore, the Chairman and Members (except in the case of Government nominees) should be appointed from the respective concerned hospitals. In instances of vacancies within a category, a member from a nearby Government hospital may be co-opted to maintain the effectiveness of the Medical Board.
