CSIR-NPL and CPCB set a Provisional Certification of Low Volume Manual PM2.5 Samplers

The CSIR-National Physical Laboratory (NPL ) and the CPCB on 10th October, 2024 has established a process for the provisional certification of low volume manual PM2.5 samplers. This initiative aims to ensure that these devices meet specific minimum acceptability criteria after thorough testing of critical parameters. The certification process is crucial for maintaining air quality standards and ensuring the reliability of air sampling equipment.

Certification Process Overview

The certification process involves several key steps, as outlined in the process flow document.

1. Client Submission: The client must submit an application form along with the required documents to the Centre for Calibration and Testing at NPL, located in New Delhi. The relevant contact emails for certification-related inquiries are cfct@nplindia.org and csirnpl-ics@nplindia.org.

2. Application Review: The submitted application and documents undergo verification by the committee.

3. Acceptance Intimation: Once the application is accepted, the client is informed about the certification fee and other necessary details.

4. Fee Submission: The client is required to submit the certification fee.

5. Testing Requirements: The client must provide two identical systems for testing, which should include specific components such as a time totalizer, flow meter, temperature sensor, humidity sensor, and pressure sensor.

6. Calibration of Parameters: The testing labs will calibrate several parameters, including cut point, flow rate, temperature, humidity, and pressure.

7. Certification Evaluation: The committee evaluates the test reports and makes a recommendation for the issuance of a provisional certificate.

8. Final Approval: The certification body at NPL India gives the final approval.

Critical Parameters for Testing

The provisional certification focuses on several critical parameters that must be tested to ensure compliance with the guidelines set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). These parameters include:

-Cut Point: This involves assessing the D50 cut-off size of the impactor/cyclone and the sharpness of the penetration efficiency curve.

– Size Selective Inlet Type: The design and functionality of the inlet type are evaluated.

– Time Totalizer: This component measures the total sampling time.

– Flow Rate: The flow rate must be accurately measured and maintained.

– Temperature and Humidity Sensor: These sensors are crucial for monitoring environmental conditions during sampling.

– Pressure Sensor: This sensor ensures that the pressure conditions are within acceptable limits.

The provisional certification of low volume manual PM2.5 samplers is a vital process that ensures the reliability and accuracy of air quality monitoring equipment. By adhering to the established guidelines and undergoing rigorous testing, these samplers can effectively contribute to air quality management efforts.
