CPCB Seeks Nominations for Ash Disposal Auditors for Coal Power Plants

The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued a notification inviting nominations for experts to be authorized as auditors for coal and lignite-based thermal power plants.

The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC) mandates annual compliance audits for ash disposal by these power plants. This requirement is outlined in the notification dated December 31, 2021, with subsequent amendments.

Purpose of Audits:

  • These audits will assess the power plants’ and user agencies’ adherence to ash disposal regulations.
  • The goal is to ensure environmentally sound management of ash generated by coal and lignite-based power plants.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • CPCB is seeking nominations from experts affiliated with:
    • Institutes of National Importance (IITs, IISc, NITs)
    • CSIR institutes
    • Other central and state institutions focused on science, technology, research, and environment
  • Qualification requirements vary based on the power plant’s installed capacity.

Nomination Process:

  • Interested experts must submit nominations through their respective institution’s Director or Head.
  • Nominations should be sent to power.cpcb@nic.in or nazim.cpecb@nic.in by May 29, 2024.

Appointing qualified auditors is crucial for ensuring effective implementation of ash disposal regulations. This will promote responsible ash management practices and minimize environmental impact from coal-based power generation.
