Central Government Announces Holidays for 2025

The Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) has issued an office memorandum outlining the holidays to be observed in Central Government offices during the year 2025.

All Central Government offices in Delhi/New Delhi will observe the following compulsory holidays:

  1. Republic Day
  2. Independence Day
  3. Mahatma Gandhi’s Birthday
  4. Buddha Purnima
  5. Christmas Day
  6. Dussehra (Vijay Dashmi)
  7. Diwali (Deepavali)
  8. Good Friday
  9. Guru Nanak’s Birthday  
  10. Id-ul-Fitr
  11. Id-ul-Zuha
  12. Mahavir Jayanti
  13. Muharram
  14. Prophet Mohammad’s Birthday (Id-e-Milad)

The following Additional Holidays have also been specified:

  • Central Government offices in Delhi/New Delhi will have an additional three holidays to be chosen from a list of 12 optional holidays.
  • Central Government offices outside Delhi/New Delhi will have three optional holidays to be chosen from the same list, in addition to the 14 compulsory holidays.

The dates of Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram, and Id-e-Milad may be adjusted based on the sighting of the moon.

In states where Diwali is celebrated a day in advance (Naraka Chaturdasi), Central Government offices in those states may observe the holiday on that day.

Banks will follow separate holiday guidelines issued by the Department of Financial Services.

Indian Missions abroad will have the flexibility to choose 14 holidays, in addition to the specified compulsory holidays.

The DoPT has issued these guidelines to ensure uniformity and clarity in the observance of holidays across Central Government offices.
