The Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Amendment Rules, 2022

The notification states that the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) (Amendment) Rules 2022 will come into force from 1st February, 2023. It may be recalled that previously, these rules were set to come into force on 1st January, 2023. This date has now been extended to 1st February, 2023.

Government of West Bengal notified SOP for issuance of Manufacturers, Dealers and Repairers License under the West Bengal Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011.

The purpose of this SoP is to establish the procedure for processing and disposing application in LM-1, LD-1 and LR-1 for issuance of manufacturer, dealership and repairer license in LM-3, LD-3 and LR-3 respectively under rule 11 of the West Bengal Legal Metrology (Enforcement) Rules, 2011 through e-Parimap portal available at https://dolmwb.gov.in

Government of India amended the Legal Metrology (General) Rules, 2011 for ease of doing business and reducing the compliance burden for the industries.

Earlier in case of violations under the Legal Metrology Act, the prosecutions were initiated against the Directors of the companies even for the violation done by any establishment or branch or unit in any establishment or branch of the company. Section 49 of the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 allows the companies to nominate any of its Directors as a person responsible for the business of the Company.

Centre issues 63 show cause notices to the manufactures/importers of weighing and measuring instruments to seek details of compliance.

To protect and safeguard the interest of consumers, the manufacturers/importers of the weighing & measuring instrument are required to get the approval of model (Section 22) of their weighing & measuring instrument, manufacturing license (Section 23)/ importer registration (Section 19) and verification/stamping of weighing & measuring instrument (Section 24) under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

These information shall also be displayed on e-commerce website if such product is sold through e-commerce: The amendment shall come into force on 1st January, 2023. Any manufacturer or packer or importer may, notwithstanding the date of commencement of this clause, declare the above information with immediate effect.
