CAQM Enhances Plantation Drive to Combat Air Pollution

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) is introducing new measures aimed at tackling air pollution in the National Capital Region (NCR) through large-scale greening initiatives. A press release to this effect was issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change dated June 26, 2024.

Planting for Cleaner Air

Recognizing the effectiveness of vegetation in mitigating dust, a major contributor to poor air quality, CAQM has set ambitious plantation targets. After exceeding the 2022-23 target of 3.85 crore new plantations, the Commission is aiming even higher for 2024-25, with a target of 4.5 crore new trees across NCR states and Delhi.

Collaboration and Strategy

This greening effort involves active participation from NCR state governments, central government agencies, and educational institutions. The Miyawaki technique, known for creating dense urban forests, is being promoted in areas with limited space. Additionally, road-owning agencies are encouraged to green central verges and medians of major roads.

Key Takeaways from CAQM Meetings

  • Native Plant Species: Using native plant varieties is crucial for plantation success.
  • Post-Planting Care: Monitoring and proper care are essential for ensuring high survival rates.
  • Focus on Dust Barriers: Taller shrubs are recommended to trap dust more effectively.
  • Green Walls for Industry and Education: Dense vegetation barriers around industrial areas, schools, and colleges can help combat pollution.
  • Filling Gaps in Existing Plantations: Maximizing existing green cover by filling gaps in previously planted areas.
  • Community Involvement: Encouraging NGOs and Resident Welfare Associations to participate in plantation drives and public awareness campaigns.
  • Land Scarcity Solutions: Exploring options like off-campus planting for institutions with limited space.
  • Financial Support: Earmarking sufficient funds for greening initiatives, with potential support from the University Grants Commission (UGC) for educational institutions.
  • Continuous Monitoring: CAQM will closely monitor progress and ensure proper post-planting care and nurturing of native species.

This greening plan, with its focus on collaboration, strategic planting methods, and community involvement, promises a cleaner and greener future for the NCR.
