BIS Sets New Standards for Ayush Sector

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) has taken a step towards ensuring quality and safety in the Ayush sector by establishing a dedicated standardization department. This move aims to bolster the credibility and reach of traditional Indian medicine systems like Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Sowa-Rigpa, and Homoeopathy. A press release on this initiative was issued on August 9, 2024.

BIS has already made substantial progress, developing 91 standards covering various aspects of Ayush, including herbs, equipment, and practices. Notably, the introduction of standards for Panchakarma equipment is a crucial step in standardizing therapeutic procedures.

The department is working closely with experts, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to develop comprehensive and evidence-based standards. BIS’s focus on environmental sustainability is evident with the development of the “Cotton Yoga Mat” standard.

This initiative is expected to enhance the global acceptance of Ayush systems and boost the sector’s growth.
