FSSAI publishes Recommended Dietary Allowance standards for use of vitamins, minerals and amino acids

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India vide Notification dated 7th February 2020, has issued Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) standards for use of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Section 22 of Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 allows use of vitamins, minerals or amino acids in Recommended Dietary Allowance limits in functional foods, food for special dietary uses and health supplements. The Food Safety and Standards (Health Supplements, Nutraceuticals, Foods for Special Dietary Uses, Foods for Special Medical Purpose, Functional Foods and Novel Food) Regulations, 2016 allows addition of nutrients in quantity not exceeding RDA specified by ICMR and in the absence of same, as specified in codex.

Following the representations received by FSSAI from stakeholders seeking clarification regarding the RDA standards, it has issued the same in consultation with the scientific panel and committee. The RDA is attached as Annexure II of the Notification.
