FSSAI Revises standards for milk products by amending the Food Products Standards and Food Additives Regulations

The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare vide Notification dated 28th November, 2019 has amended the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulations, to alter the standards of the milk products.

Key Highlights from the amendment:

Under the standard for milk, the essential composition and quality factors of Goat or sheep milk has been reduced.

The Total sodium content in the milk powder shall not be more than 650 mg or 100 gm SNF. The maximum level does not apply to sodium that could be present due to the use of sodium containing additives in milk powders.

The Composition specification for paneer and channa has been replaced by new paramenters and based on the composition the labelling of the product shall be ‘Chhana’, ‘Paneer’, ‘Low Fat Chhana’ or Low Fat Paneer’, ‘Medium Fat Chhana’ or ‘Medium Fat Paneer.

These Regulations shall be effective from 28th November 2019 and Food Business Operator shall comply with all the provisions of these regulations by July 01, 2020.
