The Government of Meghalaya on February 18th 2025 , has declared February 21, 2025, as a public holiday in several districts to facilitate the smooth conduct of the General Elections to the Autonomous District Councils. This decision was made in light of the upcoming elections to the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils.
Areas Affected
The holiday will be observed across the following districts of Meghalaya:
- East Khasi Hills
- West Khasi Hills
- South West Khasi Hills
- Eastern West Khasi Hills
- Ri-Bhoi
- East Jaintia Hills
- West Jaintia Hills
This move is aimed at ensuring all eligible voters in these areas can participate in the democratic process without work-related distractions.
Special Leave for Garo Hills Employees
In addition to the holiday announcement, employees working in the Garo Hills who are electors in the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils will be granted Special Leave for the day. This provision ensures that voters from these districts who are employed in the Garo Hills can still fulfill their civic duties.
Paid Holiday for Industrial Workers and Casual Employees
In line with the Elections, the Government has also extended the benefit of a Paid Holiday to industrial undertakings, shops, and establishments governed by the National Industrial Relations (N.I.) Act, 1881. This includes:
- Shift workers
- Daily wage employees
- Casual workers
Additionally, workers who are employed outside of their respective constituencies but are registered voters in the Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Councils will also be entitled to this paid leave.
Legal Backing
The holiday and leave provisions are backed by Section 133(2)(b) of the National Industrial Relations Act, ensuring that employees across various sectors can participate in the elections without any financial or professional repercussions.
