On January 22, 2025, the Directorate General of Shipping (DGS) issued a circular addressing the financial and mental well-being of Indian seafarers. This proposal comes in response to the growing number of Indian seafarers and the challenges they face, particularly concerning health, medical issues, insurance coverage, and mental health support.
Key Highlights of the DGS Circular:
Seafarer Welfare Initiatives:
- In line with the MIV 2030 vision, which aims to increase Indian seafarer representation globally from 12% to 20%, the DGS recognizes the urgent need to take concrete steps to address the welfare of Indian seafarers.
Focus on Health and Insurance:
- The DGS is focusing on issues such as health and medical challenges, lack of insurance, top-up schemes, and pension covers for Indian seafarers. The Directorate is working on finding customized solutions for these challenges through consultations with insurance experts.
Collection of Data for Tailored Solutions:
- To develop effective and tailored solutions, the DGS has initiated an effort to collect detailed information from Indian seafarers and their dependent families. Seafarers are encouraged to voluntarily fill out a Google Form with their personal and family details. This information will help the Directorate analyze the needs and propose suitable insurance coverage options.
