Landmark Monograph “Pollution and Health” Launched

A new publication, “Pollution and Health,” addressing the far-reaching adverse effects of pollution on human health, has been launched by the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology. The monograph, edited by Prof. Dr. Vitull K. Gupta, Chief Editor and Chairman of the Association of Physicians of India (API), Malwa Branch, features contributions from 86 experts across India.

The launch was lauded by the Union Minister, who praised Prof. Dr. Gupta and his team for their “unique contribution to addressing a critical public health issue.” In his foreword, the Minister emphasized the growing concern over pollution levels both in India and globally, and the importance of documenting its impact on human health. He stated the monograph, with its 34 chapters covering various health impacts of pollution, would “definitely generate awareness and research interest amongst healthcare professionals and common people.” He further highlighted Dr. Gupta’s unique ability to address social issues through a medical lens, lending significant weight to the work.

The book provides detailed insights into the effects of various forms of pollution – air, water, soil, and noise – on human health. Key topics include:

  • Global warming and climate change, with a focus on cardiovascular health implications.
  • Pollution’s role in diseases such as cancer, respiratory illnesses (asthma, COPD), and neurological and psychiatric disorders.
  • Socio-economic impacts of pollution in India.
  • The potential of artificial intelligence in pollution mitigation efforts.
  • A unique chapter exploring the spiritual dimensions of pollution.

The editorial team, including Executive Editor Dr. Meghna Gupta and Assistant Editor Dr. Manpreet Singh Brar, played a vital role in shaping the monograph. Dr. Gupta dedicated the book to his family and expressed hope that it would raise awareness and inspire collective action to mitigate pollution’s harmful effects.

The project benefited from the expertise and support of numerous prominent figures, including Prof. Dr. Gurpreet S. Wander, Director of the Physicians Research Foundation of API, who authorized the project. Contributions were also made by Padma Shri Prof. Dr. Shashank Joshi, past President of API; Prof. Dr. Milind Nadkar, President of API; and Padma Shri Dr. V. Mohan. Forewords were provided by distinguished experts such as Padma Shri Prof. Dr. Anoop Misra, Prof. Dr. Mangesh Tiwaskar, and Dr. H. K. Chopra.

The monograph is available in both print and online formats and will be distributed free of charge to maximize its reach.
