The Indian Nursing Council (INC) has announced a revision in the maximum number of seats available for General Nursing Midwifery (GNM) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.Sc.[N]) programs. This notification was issued on December 27, 2024.
This decision, made by the Executive Committee of the Council on October 26, 2024, aims to increase nursing program capacity based on the bed capacity of affiliated hospitals.
New Seat Allocation System
The revised guidelines categorize hospitals by bed count and establish corresponding seat allocations for GNM and B.Sc.(N) programs. Here’s a breakdown of the new system:
Parent Hospital Beds | Institutions Offering Both Programs | GNM (Seats) | B.Sc.(N) (Seats) | Institution Offering Only B.Sc.(N) (Seats) |

Nursing institutes must maintain sections with a minimum of 60 or 100 students, as specified in the table. A 1:10 teacher-student ratio is mandatory to ensure adequate faculty supervision.
Clinical areas prescribed in the nursing program curriculum must adhere to a 1:3 student-patient ratio to guarantee sufficient practical experience.
