Progress Report on Rabi Crops Area Coverage

The Department of Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare has released its latest progress report on the area coverage under Rabi crops for the 2024-25 season. This press release was issued on December 30, 2024.

As of December 30, 2024, the total area sown under Rabi crops stands at 614.94 lakh hectares, showing a slight increase compared to 611.80 lakh hectares during the corresponding period in 2023-24.

Key Highlights of Rabi Crops Area Coverage (in lakh hectares)

1. Wheat

  • Normal Area: 312.35
  • 2024-25 Area Sown: 319.74 (Higher than 313.00 in 2023-24)
  • Wheat remains the dominant Rabi crop, with its sown area exceeding the normal and previous year’s coverage.

2. Rice

  • Normal Area: 42.02
  • 2024-25 Area Sown: 14.37 (Up from 13.61 in 2023-24)
  • While rice area coverage remains below the normal level, it shows an increase from last year.

3. Pulses

  • Normal Area: 140.44
  • 2024-25 Area Sown: 136.13 (Marginal increase from 136.05 in 2023-24)
    • Gram: 93.98 (Up from 93.17)
    • Lentil: 17.43 (Slightly down from 17.76)
    • Fieldpea: 8.94 (Stable compared to 8.98)
    • Kulthi: 3.13 (Lower than 3.42)
    • Urdbean: 4.22 (Down from 4.79)
    • Moongbean: 0.86 (Almost steady at 0.87)
    • Lathyrus: 3.12 (Slight decline from 3.32)
    • Other Pulses: 4.45 (Higher than 3.74)

4. Shri Anna (Coarse Cereals)

  • Normal Area: 53.46
  • 2024-25 Area Sown: 48.55 (Higher than 47.77 in 2023-24)
    • Jowar: 22.24 (Slightly down from 22.52)
    • Maize: 18.93 (Up from 17.53)
    • Barley: 6.62 (Lower than 7.01)

5. Oilseeds

  • Normal Area: 87.02
  • 2024-25 Area Sown: 96.15 (Declined from 101.37 in 2023-24)
    • Rapeseed & Mustard: 88.50 (Down from 93.73)
    • Groundnut: 3.32 (Stable compared to 3.31)
    • Linseed: 2.68 (Slight decline from 2.84)

Overall Trends

The total area sown for Rabi crops in 2024-25 is approaching the normal area benchmark of 635.30 lakh hectares, demonstrating stability in agricultural activity despite challenges. The slight growth in key crops like wheat and rice reflects improved sowing conditions.

The department continues to monitor sowing patterns and provide support to farmers to ensure optimal coverage across all Rabi crops.
