Ministry of Labour and Employment Extends Public Utility Service Status to Defence Industry

The Ministry of Labour and Employment has issued a notification on December 20, 2024 declaring that services engaged in the Defence establishments industry will remain designated as a public utility service under the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947 for an additional period of six months, effective from December 24, 2024.

This decision follows the previous notification dated June 12, 2024, in which the Central Government had initially declared these services as a public utility service for six months, starting June 24, 2024.

In a move to safeguard public interest, the Central Government has now extended this status for another six months, reflecting the critical role these services play in the functioning of Defence establishments. The declaration aims to ensure uninterrupted operations and prevent any industrial disputes that might disrupt essential services related to national defense.

This extension is made under the powers granted by the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, ensuring that the Defence services continue to be classified as a public utility service, thereby subject to the relevant provisions of the Act.

Extension period : December 24th 2024 to June 24th 2025
