The Government of Goa issued a notification on December 4th 2024 declaring Sunday, 8th December 2024, as a paid holiday for certain workers in the state. This decision comes in light of the upcoming Bye Election to Ward No. V of Village Panchayat Nadora, Taluka Bardez, North Goa District, scheduled for that day.
The holiday is granted under the Goa Panchayat Raj Act, 1994, specifically pursuant to sub-section (I) of section 40A. It applies to the following categories of workers, provided they are registered voters in the election:
- Industrial workers of the State of Goa.
- Daily wage workers employed in Government Departments and State Government Industrial Departments.
- Commercial and industrial workers in private establishments across the state.
- Workers in all private establishments.
- Daily wage/casual workers employed in any business, trade, industrial undertakings, or other establishments.
This move ensures that eligible workers, who are also voters in the bye-election, will have the opportunity to exercise their right to vote without any work-related hindrances. The Government of Goa is committed to facilitating participation in the democratic process and ensuring that workers are not deprived of their chance to vote due to work obligations.
This paid holiday underscores the importance of civic participation, providing a balance between work and fulfilling one’s electoral duties.
