India Intensifies Efforts to Combat Tuberculosis

India has been actively working to eliminate the disease. The National TB Elimination Programme (NTEP), under the National Health Mission (NHM), has implemented several strategies to achieve this goal. A press release on its strategies was issued on December 6, 2024.

The Key Strategies Are As Follows:

The NTEP focuses on prompt diagnosis and treatment of TB patients with high-quality drugs and treatment regimens. The program actively seeks out TB cases in high-risk and vulnerable populations.

Measures are implemented to prevent the spread of TB, especially in healthcare settings. Collaboration with various sectors, including social welfare and nutrition, is crucial for addressing the social determinants of TB.

India’s significant contribution to the global TB burden, as highlighted in the World Health Organization’s 2024 Global TB Report, has led to intensified efforts. The National TB Prevalence Survey conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) has provided valuable insights into the disease burden at the sub-national level.

Strategic Interventions:

  1. The NTEP has implemented targeted interventions in high-burden areas to address specific needs.
  2. TB patients receive free drugs and diagnostic services.
  3. Active Case Finding Campaigns focus on identifying TB cases in vulnerable populations.
  4. TB screening and treatment services are integrated into Ayushman Bharat health centers.
  5. Incentives are provided to private healthcare providers to encourage TB case notification and management.
  6. Molecular diagnostic laboratories are being established at the sub-district level to improve diagnosis accuracy.
  7. The Ni-kshay Poshan Yojana provides nutritional support to TB patients.
  8. Intensive information, education, and communication campaigns are being conducted to reduce stigma and promote healthy behaviors.
  9. Efforts are being made to coordinate with other government departments to address social determinants of TB.
  10. TB preventive treatment is being provided to contacts of TB patients and vulnerable populations.
  11. The Ni-kshay portal is used to track the progress of TB cases.
  12. The Ni-kshay Mitra initiative provides additional support to TB patients and their families.
