The Central Government has issued a notification to amend the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022. This amendment aims to streamline the regulatory framework for battery waste management in India. This notification was published December 3, 2024.
Key Amendments
- Omission of Sub-rule (2) of Rule 13: This sub-rule, which dealt with the constitution of a Central Coordination Committee, has been removed.
- Revised Penalty Provision: Sub-rule (9) of Rule 13 has been amended to specify that any person who fails to comply with the provisions of these rules shall be liable to a penalty under Section 15 of the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
These amendments are in line with the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2023, which focuses on decriminalizing certain offenses under various environmental laws.
The revised Battery Waste Management Rules will help to promote responsible battery disposal and recycling practices, reducing environmental pollution and conserving natural resources.
