Ministry of Defence Introduces Solid Waste Management Rules For Ambala, Bareilly, Roorkee, Ayodhya and Dehradun

The Ministry of Defence has introduced Solid Waste Management Bye-laws for Ambala, Bareilly, Roorkee, Ayodhya and Dehradun. These notifications were issued on November 12 and 13, 2024.

The new bye-laws aim at ensuring efficient and sustainable waste disposal practices within the cantonment areas. These bye-laws emphasize source segregation, proper storage, collection, and disposal of solid waste.

Key Provisions of the Bye-laws

Segregation of Waste

Residents and businesses are mandated to segregate waste into three categories:

  • biodegradable,
  • non-biodegradable, and
  • hazardous waste.

Collection of Waste

The Board will implement a door-to-door collection system for segregated waste. The collection will be done in specific time slots to ensure efficient and timely waste removal.

Processing and Disposal

The bye laws state that biodegradable waste will be processed through composting or biomethanation. Non-biodegradable waste will be sent to recycling facilities. Hazardous waste will be disposed of in accordance with environmental regulations.

The bye-laws encourage public participation in waste management by promoting awareness campaigns, educating citizens about waste segregation, and involving them in community-based initiatives.

The bye-laws stipulate penalties for non-compliance with the rules, including fines for littering, improper waste disposal, and failure to segregate waste.
