The National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), a government body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, has published a leaflet to raise awareness about organ and tissue donation in India. This leaflet was published on November 13, 2024.
The leaflet highlights the life-saving potential of organ donation, emphasizing how it can provide a second chance for patients suffering from organ failure.
It clarifies the difference between living and deceased organ donation, as well as the types of organs and tissues that can be donated.
It also addresses common misconceptions surrounding organ donation, such as disfigurement after donation and financial compensation.
It states that no compensation or payment for donation of organs is permissible under the THOTA 1994. However, the family is not charged for any procedure after the consent for organ donation is given.
The leaflet provides clear instructions on how to register as an organ donor through the NOTTO website using your Aadhaar number. This allows individuals to easily express their wish to donate organs and tissues.
The leaflet also emphasizes NOTTO’s efforts in establishing regional and state-level networks (ROTTOs and SOTTOs) to streamline the organ donation and transplantation process across India.
