National Electricity Plan Volume II – Transmission

The Ministry of Power (MoP) has published the National Electricity Plan Volume II – Transmission. This volume was published in October 2024.

India’s rapid economic growth has led to a surge in electricity demand. To meet this increasing demand and ensure reliable power supply, the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has released the National Electricity Plan (Volume II: Transmission).

Key Highlights of the Plan

The plan outlines the development of the transmission system, including inter-state and intra-state transmission lines and substations.

The plan focuses on adding 1,04,400 circuit kilometers (ckm) of transmission lines and 3,27,889 MVA of transformation capacity during the period 2017-22 to accommodate the increasing electricity demand.

Despite challenges, substantial progress has been made in strengthening the transmission network. As of 2022, 88,865 ckm of transmission lines and 349,685 MVA of transformation capacity have been added, exceeding targets in some areas.

The plan outlines the roadmap for future transmission system development, considering factors like renewable energy integration, electrification of transportation, and industrial growth.

A robust transmission system is crucial for:

  • Ensuring uninterrupted power supply to consumers.
  • Facilitating the transfer of electricity from generation sources to load centers.
  • Maintaining the stability and security of the power grid.
  • Accommodating the increasing share of renewable energy sources in the power mix.

By investing in the transmission infrastructure, India aims to strengthen its power sector, enhance energy security, and drive economic growth.
