As part of the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the Union Government has sanctioned three pilot projects to explore the use of hydrogen in steel production. These projects aim to identify advanced technologies and assess the feasibility of incorporating green hydrogen into steelmaking processes. A press release on the launch of these projects was issued on October 18, 2024.
National Green Hydrogen Mission
Launched in January 2023 with an outlay of Rs. 19,744 crores, the National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to make India self-reliant in clean energy. It is expected to significantly reduce India’s dependence on fossil fuels and contribute to global efforts to combat climate change.
Objectives of the Pilot Projects
- Identify suitable technologies for utilizing green hydrogen in steelmaking.
- Demonstrate the safe and secure operation of green hydrogen-based steelmaking processes.
- Validate the technical feasibility and performance of these processes.
- Evaluate the economic viability of green hydrogen-based steel production.
Sanctioned Projects
The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has approved the following three pilot projects:
- Matrix Gas and Renewables Ltd: A consortium involving Gensol Engineering Ltd, Indian Institute of Technology Bhubaneswar, and Metsol AB, Sweden. Plant capacity: 50 tons per day (TPD).
- Simplex Castings Ltd: A consortium with BSBK Pvt. Ltd. and Ten Eight Investment, IIT Bhilai. Plant capacity: 40 TPD.
- Steel Authority of India Ltd (Ranchi): Plant capacity: 3200 TPD.
The Government of India will provide financial support of Rs. 347 crore for these pilot projects.
These projects are expected to be commissioned within the next three years.
