India Adopts Iron-Fortified Rice Initiative

The Indian government has issued a press release on its initiative to provide fortified rice under various welfare schemes, including the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana (PMGKAY). This decision aims to address micronutrient deficiencies in the country. This press release was issued on October 17, 2024.

Safety of Fortified Rice

Scientific studies have shown that fortified rice is safe for consumption by all individuals, including those with hemoglobinopathies like Thalassemia and Sickle Cell Anemia.

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has removed the advisory label on fortified rice packaging for individuals with these conditions, following recommendations from expert committees. Organizations like World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) do not mandate such advisories.

Benefits of Rice Fortification

  • Rice fortification is a strategy to combat iron deficiency, a significant public health issue in India.
  • The PMGKAY program reaches a vast population, ensuring widespread access to fortified rice.
  • India has an ecosystem for rice fortification, with numerous manufacturers, testing labs, and blending equipment.

Global Practices

Rice fortification is a globally recognized practice, with many countries implementing similar programs. According to the Global Fortification Data Exchange 18 countries actively allow rice fortification.

The continuation of the fortified rice initiative is a significant step towards improving the nutritional status of the Indian population. The provision of fortified rice aims to address micronutrient deficiencies and promoting public health.
