Enhancing Electrical Safety: Tamil Nadu’s New Guidelines

On October 15, 2024, the Tamil Nadu Power Generation and Distribution Corporation (TANGEDCO) introduced essential Electrical Safety Mechanisms aimed at preventing accidents and ensuring safe electrical practices in homes and public spaces. :

Key Electrical Safety Guidelines

  1. Install ELCBs: Placing an Earth Leakage Circuit Breaker (ELCB) near the service main in homes can significantly reduce the risk of electrical leakage, preventing potential accidents.
  1. Avoid Moisture: Switches should not be operated with wet hands, and they should never be installed in damp areas like bathrooms or toilets to minimize the risk of shock.

  2. Proper Use of Plug Points: Electric wires should not be plugged into outlets for purposes other than their intended use. This helps avoid overloading and potential hazards.
  1. Regular Maintenance: Broken switches, faulty plugs, and old electrical appliances should be updated or repaired promptly to maintain safety in your home.
  1. Child Safety: Ensure that switches and plugs are installed at a height that is out of reach of children, preventing accidental contact.
  1. Use of Three-Pin Plugs: Appliances like grinders, mixers, and irons should always be used with three-pin plugs that have an earth connection to prevent electrical hazards
  1. Agricultural Safety: The installation of electric fences on agricultural land is illegal due to the risks of electrocution to people and animals. It’s crucial to adhere to this law for everyone’s safety.
  1. Tree Maintenance: Residents are advised to contact electricity board officials for the removal of tree branches that are too close to overhead power lines to avoid disruptions and hazards.
  1. Cattle Safety: Avoid tying cattle to electric poles or their supporting wires to prevent accidents.
  1. Standing Water Precautions: Never approach power transformers and distribution boxes if there is standing water nearby, as this significantly increases the risk of electric shock.
