The National Medical Commission (NMC) has issued additional clarifications on its Competency-Based Medical Education (CBME) Guidelines, 2024. These clarifications were published on October 10, 2024.
It may be recalled that the NMC had released revised Guidelines for Competency Based Medical Education (CBME) Curriculum for 2024 on September 12, 2024. Now, the NMC has further made additional clarifications following observations by the Madras High Court.
Key Points from the Corrigendum
- The NMC emphasizes that regulations and guidelines are applicable as and when published and circulated to medical colleges.
- The MBBS curriculum serves as a guide for faculty members in teaching, learning, and assessment. It outlines competencies and suggests methods but does not mandate verbatim inclusion of every guideline.
- The NMC recognizes the need for updates to medical textbooks to reflect the evolving understanding of disability and promote inclusivity. The NMC will direct universities to instruct their respective publishers to make necessary changes to textbooks based on the NMC’s revised disability guidelines.
- NMC acknowledges that schools teach medico-legal knowledge related to homosexuality, bisexuality, gender incongruence, and dysphoria, and therefore, it has determined that incorporating additional content does not fall within the MBBS curriculum.
The NMC encourages individuals writing in the media to carefully review relevant sections of the guidelines published by respective NMC boards and submit suggestions for implementation. This feedback will help improve the curriculum and address any concerns.
