On October 9, 2024, the Government of Punjab made an important announcement: a holiday will be observed on October 15, 2024, to facilitate the General Elections for Gram Panchayats. This initiative is aimed at ensuring that all workers in registered shops and establishments have the opportunity to participate in the electoral process.
As per the notification, the government stated that workers employed in registered shops and establishments within Punjab, who are also enrolled voters in their respective Gram Panchayat jurisdictions, will be exempt from the provisions of sub-section 1 of Section 10 of the Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, 1958. This exemption allows them the freedom to vote without facing any penalties or work-related restrictions on polling day.
