CERC Issues Directives to Ensure Power Supply During Peak Demand Period

The Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has issued directives to the National Load Despatch Centre (NLDC), Regional Load Despatch Centres (RLDCs), and State Load Despatch Centres (SLDCs) to ensure adequate power supply during the anticipated surge in demand in October 2024. These directions were issued by an Order dated October 7, 2024.

Key Directives of the CERC

All SLDCs and RLDCs must submit details of their operational planning for October 2024, including resource adequacy assessments. SLDCs and RLDCs should prepare for the worst-case scenario of a demand surge during the period October 1st to 31st, 2024.

SLDCs and RLDCs must assess demand-generation scenarios, optimize generation, avoid unnecessary outages, and encourage generating companies to offer their full capacity.

Distribution companies can procure power from surplus or requisitioned capacity in other states during shortages.

Generating companies should address technical issues to ensure maximum capacity on-bar.

The draw schedule for each control area must be adhered to prevent system frequency reduction.

SLDCs and RLDCs must issue system alerts to grid-connected entities about potential deficits during peak demand periods.

Reporting Requirements

NLDCs, RLDCs, and SLDCs are required to submit reports on the implementation of these measures, load-generation scenarios, and any actions taken to address power supply deficits during October 2024. The deadline for submission is October 16, 2024.

Objective of the Directives

The CERC has issued these directives to ensure a reliable and stable power supply during the peak demand period in October 2024.
